The Council enumerates what they mean in the following recommendations. Organizations should, they urge:
- Determine their logging requirements.
- Define the high-level activities to be monitored.
- Identify all potential log sources.
- Document log source characteristics.
- Identify and map system-level event messages to high-level messages.
- Prioritize their log sources.
- Determine who to notify when security events occur.
- Define procedures to respond to security events.
- Document logging requirements, including logging policy and use cases.
